WDF Post Game Analysis — Game 38, The Finale

Three thousand, four hundred and twenty. That’s how many regular game minutes there are in a Barclays Premier League season, almost thirty five hundred minutes of soccer to feast our eyes on. “Football crack” as I call it (I’m a serious addict, ask my girlfriend). In all my years, I have never seen a season as dramatic as this one. It had it all: the goals, the glory, the violence (see Joey Barton, wank), the heartbreak. The Luis Suarez affair, the Cisse supremacy, the Torres revival — you name it, this season had it. We look at how this finale played out and how three minutes of extra time decided this season. Manchester City’s incredible fight back will become legend. Stuff that will have Hollywood producers licking their chops, imagining Daniel Day-Lewis playing the coy and smooth talking Roberto Mancini and Christian Bale portraying United great Ryan Giggs (alright, I’m fishing here but you get my point). Probably the most dramatic football story ever, and we all saw it first hand. Where to begin? Let’s start with the title decider. United took on Sunderland as City were home to QPR. The United game was tepid for the most part, the men in red fully in the drivers seat. Though only a one-nil affair, it was one-way traffic. Rooney’s superbly taken header had United on course for their 20th league title. Having only three minutes of injury time, United had to wait 120 seconds, which probably felt like hours, to see if their efforts were in vain. Even with the score leveled at the Etihad Stadum, the United players would never had foreseen an outcome like this one. Sergio Aguero had ideas: ideas of grandiose of glory for the billion-dollar squad City had assembled. The last kick of the game decided the season and it was the Argentine, the son-in-law of Diego Maradona, which penned his name into City history. Elsewhere, Arsenal secured third and Tottenham pulled off fourth. Newcastle couldn’t put the finishing touches on an already incredible season, losing to Everton, finishing fifth with Chelsea right behind them. Liverpool’s game against Swansea summed up their season: abysmal. If Kenny has his job in September, I will be very surprised. Finishing below Everton is unacceptable, nothing against The Toffees. Another surprise was the promotion/relegation battle: all three teams that were promoted stayed up. Great to see the level of the First Division and all it’s quality trickling down the echelons.
We will return with BPL coverage in August but until then, stay thirsty my friends. Live football, love football, play football.

WDF Pre-Game: Manchester City FC vs Manchester United FC - Game 36

For what do we call this pandemonium of an epic derby collision between these two juggernauts we call Manchester United and Manchester City...We shall call it the "SIEGE OF MANCHESTER". In the town of Manchester, United has always been the neighbour o show of his fancy red Jaguar. He washes it, wax it and speeds up and down town while his neighbour, City looks over next door in envy. Nut now it seems as if the tables have turned. City's recent hard work in the office has earned him a promotion and a new company car; an Aston Martin. And it seems as if United isn't the only kid on the block with a fast car. For so long United has been the dominant team in Manchester, title after title. Just a couple weeks ago there was an impression among all of us that even with a United that is missing a lot of tools in the box, were still able still some how going to pull off another Premier League title. United's tie against Everton last week with a combination of a City win over Wolvehampton last week has reduced that five point table lead to THREE!! I don't think there has been a derby to this scale between to strong teams. Already between these two teams there has been three lead changes on the table. This ia a straight up inner city battle for the title. United have won three of the past five meetings between them and CIty. United have the history but les not forget about the last meeting between these two teams ended in City blowing up United 6 - 1and City have been in very good form for most of this season. SInce that big loss in October, United have filled in there defensive holes...or somewhat have. It is more like filling in a pipe leak with some gum, it will work for a short while but it is not practical and will not last for very long. And on that note I honestly think that is what this game will come down too; will Manchester United's defence be strong and hold their ground or will they be cut up by the Manchester City front line with their diagonal runs.

Man City Key Player - Carlos Tevez: If there was any man that could bring down the axe on United's title dreams it would be Carlos Tevez. Tevez has scored against his former team with two different teams. Tevez has also been looking in good form scoring four goals in has last three games. This includes his hat-trick against Norwich. Look for him to test Rio Ferdinand with his pace.

Man United Key Player - Wayne Rooney: Easy and simple when Rooney plays well United plays well. Especially with United's lack of creativity in the centre of the park they will need Rooney to play his regular role of midfielder and attacker. He has also been in good form. Rooney has five goals in his pas four games. Even if he doesn't score expect him to create space for Danny Welbeck and Javier Hernandez, because of his movement on and off the ball.

WDF Post Game Analysis: Game 35

Well good people, this is the new Barclays Premier League. A league where no one is safe. Where they three teams that are promoted are mid-table and regulars like Bolton and Blackburn are relegation threatened. Where seven teams fight for four spots. This is the prologue to our analysis of the hardest league to call, worldwide.

Arsenal FC vs. Chelsea FC, April 21st

A game that was supposed to be a thriller, turned out to be quite a bore. Chelsea looked content to maintain possession and look for a point as neither team looked like breaking the deadlock before the half-hour mark. Torres, in for Drogba, made a few clever moves, but nothing came of his industry and guile. The one notable chance came to the home side, as Walcott wiped in a dangerous free kick from the right side that miraculously fell to the prolific Arsenal number 10. van Persie’s effort drove straight into Cech hands and the 27-goal man denied his 28th of the season. The tepid affair became duller and the second half posed no interesting points apart from the Walcott injury (what looked like a hamstring tweak). van Persie created little in the way of chance, the talismanic striker's attempts impotent at best. The visitors almost broke free but not for a brilliantly dangerous tackle on Daniel Sturridge inside the six-yard box. Both teams will need to step up their attempts if they look to dismantle Newcastle in the race for fourth.

Newcastle United FC vs. Stoke City FC, April 21

From the moment the whistle blew, this game was one-way traffic. Yes, Stoke City had a few notable chances but this game was written as a win before it had even began. Newcastle’s two-man show did it again as Cisse and Cabaye flexed their creative muscles all over the pitch. The game started with a bang, with Johan Cabaye opening the scoring. A quick counter attack orchestrated by Hatem Ben Arfa down the left proved perilous for the Stoke defense. Ben Arfa skipped my Marc Wilson to tee up Cisse, only for his brilliantly taken header to rattle off the woodwork. Cabaye was on hand to nod in the opener from four yards out. The game could have started differently with John Walters wasting an excellent opportunity to put Stoke ahead. But it was all Newcastle and four minutes after the introductory goal, Cabaye was at it again. A quick counter-attack broke Cabaye and Cisse free and the Frenchman found his Senegalese partner with an exquisite pass from left to centre. Cisse slotted home the nutmeged pass and the game was all but over. A few chances went Stokes way but nothing of distinguished worth to put on paper. The second half came and just before the hour mark, Cabaye hit home a fastidious 20-yard curler. The game fizzled out and Newcastle marched, yet again, towards the elusive Champions League spot.

Manchester United FC vs. Everton FC, April 22nd

This game epitomized why we watch the English Premier League. It also gives anyone who is trying to predict these matches a near impossible task. Where to begin! The game erupted into life with Jelavic opening the scoring — a sublime header off a brilliant cross from Hibbert — just after the half hour mark. Jelavic had to place his header perfectly, going back across goal, finding the side mesh. United responded eight minutes later with his own idea of a well-taken header and turned home a wonderful cross from Nani. The winger from Portugal was looking dangerous down the left flank and would do more damage later on. The second half began and it went all United's way in the opening minutes. Ten minutes into the last 45, Welback made a goal out of nothing. The ball fell to him at the top of the box and some crafty footwork opened the space. The young English striker opened his hips and fired in a glorious shot into the top right corner. Nani was on hand three minutes later and a well worked one touch play around the Everton box — something of a United staple — put the left winger through. A lovely chip beat Tim Howard and the game seemed all but over. Everton were not about to roll over and it was Hibbert again that was the provider. The right back found an unmarked Fellaini with a low cross, the Belgium international hitting a sweat volley to put the game within one goal. United were at it again, and Rooney and Welback combined to put the home side two goals to the good. The Toffees kept asking the question of a very precarious Untied defense and their probing paid off. Phil Neville sent in a dangerous ball into the six-yard box, looking for Fellaini. Johnny Evans and Rio Ferdinand made an absolute mess of the clearance and Jelavic was first to jump on the sloppy defense. A well taken, close range volley form the Croatian striker put the game with reach and two minutes later, the drama continued. A lovely worked play down the left flank, combined with shoddy marking from a certain United right back (Rafael) put Steven Pienaar in on goal and the South African made no mistake. The left-winger banged in the close range shot to tie the game up, four a-piece. The game ended with a few more attempts going Manchester’s way, none of which coming to fruition. United will feel robbed of three points but the only assailant of their worries is their self. Attack wins games, but defense wins titles.

Liverpool FC vs. West Bromwich Albion FC, April 22nd

Poor Liverpool. Kenny Dalglish hit the nail on the head (or whatever that saying is) in his post game: “Same old story.” Sadly it is. The Reds have hit the woodwork a stunning 30 times this season. If they had tucked a third of those chances away, the men in red would be fighting for a Champions League spot at this point. But the gods had different ideas. The ever-improving Andy Carroll and consistent threat that is Luis Suarez could not find their scoring boot on this day. The Reds laid siege to the WBA defense and the all action display almost led to the opener ten minutes into the first half. Suarez twisted and turned, in his customary fashion, and slipped a perfect ball into the right flank for Dirk Kuyt. The Dutch hit-man-turned-winger smashed his shot wide of the mark to sum up a torrid season. My spidey-senses tell me the Netherlands international is on his way out of the Anfield door come the end of the season. The onslaught continued and this time it was Glen Johnson who played provider. A cute run from the right flank and a sweet pass found Suarez just inside the box. The Uruguayan striker ripped a shot into Ben Foster’s hands and the resulting loose ball was fired over the top by Maxi Rodriguez. WBA had a few things to say about the game and almost caught Liverpool sleeping. Just before the half hour mark, Shane Long headed Jonas Olsson’s long ball into the path of Chris Brunt, only for the right-wingers volley to be palmed away in convincing fashion by Pepe Reina. The Spanish keeper reestablished his worth after his three game suspension at Newcastle. WBA had started to find a rhythm and a Liam Ridgewell almost opened the scoring from a West Brom corner. The centre back hit his shot straight into the hands of Reina. The first half ended, and the home side must have gone into the dressing rooms perplexed at how they weren’t in front by at least two goals. Jordan Henderson hit a sweet strike after another brilliant build-up by the Reds after the restart. The young Englishman was on the end of another play down the right flank and hit the woodwork from 17 yards out. A scramble in front of the net almost fell perfectly for Jay Spearing who’s resulting shot was cleared off the line by a relieved West Brom defense. But it was WBA who struck with impunity 15 minutes before the final whistle. Glen Johnson’s perfect game in attack was quickly turned into a nightmare in defense. The right back’s dangerous lateral pass was intercepted my Mulumbu and found it’s way to Peter Odemwingie who wrong footed the Liverpool goalie, firing the Baggies into the lead. It was the sucker punch, the fatal blow, and Liverpool had no counter. The Merseyside outfit continued to probe but could produce nothing of meaning. Kenny Dalglish’s side have now taken 12 points from 14 games this calendar year and are 16 points adrift of the top four place they so desperately strive for. Can Kenny turn it around? I think so.

We wrap up this week with our scores: Justin takes home the points for this week having guessed a draw at the Emirate over my Arsenal victory. Thanks for tuning in and we’ll talk and be boggled by the EPL next weekend.
Cheers.

WDF Pre-Game Big 4 Line Up: Game 35

Arsenal FC vs. Chelsea FC, April 21st

Arsenal FC: The Robin van Persie’s are looking pretty much unstoppable at the moment, if not for, well, Robin van Persie. Others have helped out with the resurrection: Walcott now has something to play for (Oxlade-Chamberlaine), Alex Song looks as efficient as ever, transforming defense into attack almost effortlessly, and with natural full backs in their ranks (Sagna and Gibbs) Arsene Wenger has cause to wriggle out a very French smile. This match is a true test of their resolve as they are facing an incredibly in-form team in Chelsea. Both teams are fancying a counter-attack style of play, as they vie for entry into the Champions League, which with every Premier League season seems harder to qualify for.
Key Player — Robin van Persie: I have always been a big fan of the multi talented striker, but I believe if he had picked up the slightest of injuries this season, Arsenal would be in seventh right now. He is their goal machine — scoring, assisting and generally being the main reason behind anything offensive at that club. John Terry and whoever he is partnered with will have a tough job holding him down.

Chelsea FC: The Blues come into this game full of renewed confidence with the arrival of Roberto Di Matteo and a hard fought victory over mighty Barcelona. This is both a blessing and a curse for the south London club. Arsenal have the luxury of competing for one competition (a Champions League spot) and Chelsea are involved in three (FA Cup, Champions League and a top four finish). One of Chelsea’s many strengths is their depth and they will have to call upon this if they expect to win at the Emirates Saturday. Having played Wednesday against the world’s best team, they now have to go to a very strong opposition, with only two days of “rest.” Expect to see Lampard on the bench and Torres starting up front.
Key Player — Didier Drogba: The man in form for Chelsea currently, though the whole team has looked strong as a unit. Drogba seems to think that he’s 25 again, and is playing like it. He ran circles around Gallas in the FA Cup game against Tottenham and popped up with the winner mid-week against Barcelona, no small feat may I add. His power and close control combined with an absolutely ruthless finishing ability make him one of the Premier Leagues most feared strikers.

Justin’s Pick: Arsenal 2 – 2 Chelsea                         Austin’s Pick: Arsenal 2 – 1 Chelsea

Newcastle United FC vs. Stoke City FC, April 21st

Newcastle United FC: The surprise package this season. Many thought their fine form would fizzle out by this time but some brilliant purchases by manager Alan Pardew helped the Magpies in their continued hunt for Champions League football. Now, that being said, I do not think they have what it takes to play Champions League ball but a few more acquisitions in the summer could make them a real force come next season. Back to the present, if Cisse can continue his ridiculous run of form, I foresee a rout at the Sport Direct Arena.
Key Player — Papiss Cisse: The Senegalese sensation. The supplier of goals. The stupefier (not a word) of defenses. Yep, he’s been magnificent since his bargain move from FC Frieburg. Scoring goals seems so casual for the big man, and I expect him to continue his fine run of form. Ten goals in nine appearances… need I say more?

Stoke City FC: The club still playing what most call “The English Way.” A brand of incredibly boring football but gets the job done. That being said, Tony Pulis has done a magnificent job of forming a team that no one wants to play against. He is up against a much stronger squad in the form of Newcastle, who can also play that traditional style of long ball football mentioned earlier. I suspect Stoke to put 11 men behind the ball and fight hard for a draw or maybe a 1-0 win. Expect an extremely defensive display from The Potters.
Key Player — Peter Crouch: The much traveled striker scored probably his best goal to date a few weeks back and is looking very much a veteran goal scorer. His aerial prowess and brilliant touch (which came out of nowhere, see World Cup 2006) make him a pain for any defense. If Stoke can unleash the 6”7’ striker, Newcastle may have far more problems than expected.

Justin’s Pick: Newcastle 2-0 Stoke                             Austin’s Pick: Newcastle 2-0 Stoke

Manchester United FC vs. Everton FC, April 22st

Manchester United FC: The big man has done it again. Sir Alex the King has made something out of nothing, yet again. He boggles my mind! How do you make Johnny Evens look good?! Whatever, stupid Scotsman…:) United are looking like champions once more and I expect a routine win over Wayne Rooney’s former employers. As much as United are looking like Champions of England, they will come against a stern test against the blue half of Liverpool. Everton are not to be trifled with, and are on a fine run of form, downing Swansea, West Brom and Sunderland with considerable ease. That being said, United are a superlative team and moreover, the better team. Expect a battle for the first 60 minutes but United to unleash the beast Rooney against his boyhood club.
Key Player — Sir Alex Ferguson: The Mastermind. The maestro. The grey-haired handler. Call him what you want, he’s brilliant. I honestly want to see him strap on his old boots and make an on-field appearance. I know it sounds ridiculous but look at Scholes and Giggs. Why can’t he do it??? Next thing you know he’ll convince Cantona to come out of retirement. Christ! Leave them alone! No one’s judging you if you call it a day, man!

Everton FC: Everton are coming into this game full of confidence, having disposed of Sunderland 4-0. They are also sitting in seventh place in the league, which is no small feat considering the dogfight at the top of the table. The do have a tremendous task on their hands heading to Old Trafford. Nullifying the threat of Rooney will help slow United down, but the real problem will come in the final 15 minutes. United are notorious for scoring late goals, a true testament to their character, and have done so on 18 occasions already this season. If Everton can play 95 minutes of solid defense and try and counter the counter, they could come up with a surprise win.
Key Player — Leighton Baines: The Dynamic left back is looking like usurping Ashley Coles place in the England line up, and for good reason. He has been astounding for The Toffees this season, coming up with five goals and two assists. On the other end of the spectrum, he’s helped keep nine clean sheets and been the team’s most consistent player. His task Sunday will be to nullify the wide right player (Nani, Young or Valencia, all of whom are incredibly dangerous). A daunting task, but an attainable one for the England international.

Justin’s Pick: Manchester 2-0 Everton                      Austin’s Pick: Manchester 3-0 Everton

Liverpool FC vs. West Bromwich Albion FC, April 22st

Liverpool FC: There is a mini revival on the Merseyside and that comes in the form of Andy Carroll. Yes, the much-maligned striker has found the goings tough and after 16 months of mediocrity, he’s now hitting excellent form. It’s becoming infectious, and Luis Suarez, Steven Gerrard and Martin Skrtel (Liverpool player of the season for me) are feeling its affects. Liverpool are at home to a mediocre West Brom side who will probably sit back and defend, trying to catch Liverpool on the counter-attack. If Liverpool can restore the defensive stability of earlier this season (Johnson, Skrtel, Agger, Enrique) West Brom will be the first of many casualties to the Reds. Expect a forward game from Liverpool, playing Suarez and Carroll up top as a front two, If Kenny has any sense about him. It was Fernando Torres that came up with the winner the last time these two sides met — can the new number 9 do the same?
Key Player — Andy Carroll: A few weeks ago, I had written a first draft on the failures of the big striker and man, I’m glad I didn’t post that! He has done very well for himself in the last couple of weeks but he still has a lot to learn. His ability in the air is second to none and he’s getting better at bringing the ball down but there are some glaring weaknesses in his play that still need to be worked out. As a conditioner, I would drill the young man on his lower abdominal area, as he suffers from tall mans abs disease — all upper abs — hence his weakness in dribbling and acceleration. If he can get those down, he will be absolutely unstoppable. To the present, he will almost assuredly lead the line against West Brom, and if he can continue his run of form, they will have a lot to think about in defense.

West Bromwich Albion FC: The former boss comes home. Kenny recently said Roy will be welcomed back with a warm reception, but I don’t see this in the cards. He left Liverpool in shambles and I don’t think the Kop will be as forgiving as Dalglish is insinuating. West Bromwich Albion are coming off a 1-0 victory over QPR heading to Anfield. Roy’s ability to muster wins against top teams is well noted (Man U, Juventus, Liverpool) and the men in Red will have to be aware of this. He’s the king of the underdog story and he’ll be hoping for a retelling against his former club.
Key PlayerYoussouf Mulumbu: The Congolese international has been the engine room for West Brom this season. He does it all: defend, attack and everything in between. He has been the most consistent player for West Brom and they will look to him to break up Liverpool’s attack and transition defense into attack with pace. He strength and vision will be required in full force as he faces one of the best midfielders in the world in the form of Steven Gerrard. If he can stop the prolific Liverpool skipper, West Brom have an outside chance of leaving Anfield with all three points.

Justin’s Pick: Liverpool 2-0 WBA                    Austin’s Pick: Liverpool 2-0 West WBA

WDF Team to Watch: Manchester United FC

A pretty easy decision, honestly. For the last two months United have look like the champions of the EPL once again. The king of the last two decades has done it again and turned the ship around (what’s with me and boat references??). An honorable mention to Newcastle as they have done stunning work this season, more notably in the last couple of months. But Fergy has done it again. Now, I know City fans will whine that the season is not yet over, but it is. To be honest, they never had a chance. Don’t get me wrong, the turn around at that club has been fantastic (although with a billion pounds at your disposal, I’m pretty sure my dead grandmother could assemble an amazing team). But they were always doomed to a better side. United are not more skilled or stronger or faster; if anything, man for man, City are a far better team. But the sad fact is that this is not tennis in that it is a team sport and Sir Alex Ferguson has the best team in the Premier League, bar none. That’s what happens when you commit to one manager for 20 years: there’s continuity. I’m getting off topic, as this is not WDF News; it is a Team of the Month and we will have plenty to talk about when United lift the Trophy in a few months time. There is no one reason why United have won 12 of their last 14 matches, it comes down to the united front (get it?) that Sir Alex has constructed. He’s made Johnny Evens look like an excellent player, for Christ’s sake! The person that is responsible for this success is Alex Ferguson. Now, as I said before, there is no one player that is accountable for their accomplishments. United line up a 4-4-1-1 with Rooney playing in the tradition number 10 role, but in reality he plays centre back as much as he plays striker. For all of United’s strengths there have been some glaring holes in the system. A solid centre midfielder with creativity and guile would be greatly welcomed by the Old Trafford faithful as well as a much-needed face-lift in defense. There has been talk of United bringing in Nathaniel Clyne, one of England’s most talented right backs who’s currently plying his trade at Crystal Palace. He would be a brilliant acquisition for United as they haven’t had a natural right back since Gary Neville departed. They need someone to take the number 2 kit and make it their own, as I don’t see the Fabio twins as the answer to this problem. All in all, come May, it will be Manchester United that lift the Barclays Premier League Trophy for the 20th time. Sir Alex will triumph again, and you know what? He bloody well deserves it.

Prospects Corner: Neymar

Yes ladies and gentlemen, the one and only, Neymar. The man they say is the next Pele. The prodigal son. The shining light of Brazilian football. The savior. The new beginning. Call him what you want, he’s brilliant. Defenders in South America can’t handle him. Not too surprising, he’s ruthless. I shall begin, as what is now becoming customary for Austin blogs (rants), at the beginning. J  The prodigy began where he currently resides, at Santos. Yes, the comparison wheel is spinning and it keeps landing on… Pele! See if you can spot the similarities as we go (get ready for some Where’s Waldo shit). Neymar has been registered as a Santos member for nine years already. He progressed through the ranks and at 14; he was given a trail at Real Madrid. Santos were not about to give away their next sensation and this was back in the time of the first Galácticos. His chances in a first team role would have been limited, competing against the likes of Zidane, Ronaldo (the fat one) and Robinho to name a few. So he stayed. And man, Madrid must be kicking themselves today! It’s funny because they did the same with Pepe; they could have signed him at 21 for about €3 million but instead waited three years for him to be worth €30 million. Don’t get me started. Side bar — back to the task at hand. Neymar made his profession debut at the tender age of 17 coming on as a substitute late in a 2-1 victory over Oeste. I think they knew he would be a hit because he played 48 more games that season, scoring 14 goals… At 17!?! What the hell kind of season has over 48 season games and what 17-year-old is mature enough to play two games a week of 24 weeks?!? Anyways, crazy Brazilian schedules aside, the child star continued his ascendancy and became a full starter the following season. Now stats are getting boring. The way the kid moves is almost unstoppable! Like Pele, Neymar is incredibly fast, has a wicked touch and an eye for goal (40 of them in 84 appearances… At 20?!?!). He couldn’t overcome his comparer who at 18 years old scored 58 goals in one season. Yes, that’s Pele for you. Neymar is a force to be reckoned with and every defender on that continent is well aware of this fact. Having already won 19 personal honors at national and international levels and being worth approximately £65 million and rising every year, the young forward from São Paulo is destined for greatness. But is he better then Pele? Only time will tell.

WDF NEWS: Fabrice Muamba — A Get Better Note

A relatively tame FA Cup match between Tottenham and Bolton became a nightmare right before half time. Close to the centre circle, three minutes before the whistle was to be blown, Fabrice Muamba collapsed. No tackle, no awkward step, Muamba just fell. The players immediately rushed to him and seconds later the on-field paramedics were there. Referee Howard Webb, after about eight minutes, called for the game to be abandoned. Muamba was found to have suffered a cardiac arrest (you're heart literally stops), and was officially dead for 78 minutes. He was rushed to a London hospital where the central midfielder miraculously awoke. We wish Muamba a speedy recovery and swift return to football (though doctors have made no indication that he will ever play again). Muamba's first words when he woke: "Did we lose?" Live a footballer, die a footballer. Almost.

WDF NEWS: Chelsea and Abramovich, A Match Made In… Somewhere

And here we go again. The search resumes. Honestly, it’s getting kinda boring! Roman, pick someone and bloody stick with him! He’s like the George Clooney of football, except Russian and ridiculously rich. Wait isn’t George… Never mind.  Where to start, I suppose at the beginning is a good place. J Roman Abramovich took over Chelsea in 2003, immediately funding huge commercial efforts to make The Blues a world-wide brand similar to Manchester United and Real Madrid. With great success in the first season, Abramovich hired the self-proclaimed “Special One” (Jose Mourinho) after he led Porto to a surprise Champions League win. Mourinho had great success and the rest is history. Now this is where it gets interesting... Having one of the best coaches around under his employment, Abramovich decided to hire Avram Grant to his board, as a Director of Football. This, accompanied with the purchase of Andriy Shevchenko (apparently against Mourinho’s discretion), was the beginning of the end for Chelsea. That’s a lie. They’re still a great club with a rich past and slightly promising future, but it was the end of any consistency they’d see for a long time. Abramovich was trying to control the way Mourinho coached his side, and let me tell you, as a coach, there is nothing more restraining than an owner trying to tell you how to do your job. So in September of 2007 Mourinho had enough and left the club. It’s not like he was the most successful manager in Chelsea history or anything, or that he had won six trophies in 3 years. No, that wasn’t enough for Abramovich; he needed more, and he’s yet to find it. So, with hiring and firing seven managers since the Special One left, none of which have come close to achieving what Mourinho did, Abramovich is probably wondering where it all went wrong. Fast track to 2012, Andre Villas Boas has just been sacked, Chelsea are a mess and have no three, two or even one year plan. Where now? Back to Mourinho? I doubt it. My spidey senses tell me that he wouldn’t make the same mistake twice. No, the real problem is Ambramovich. He needs to sit down, shut-up and pay the bloody bills! Chelsea will sink to the sad depths of obscurity of he doesn’t. Hire David Moyes (Everton) and let him completely revamp the system there. Imagine what he could do with some actual money! What he has done, and is continuing to do at Everton is amazing. He has an eye for talent that could rival Sir Alex (see Wayne Rooney) and he’s made a team out of almost nothing. GOD! Just do it already! Or somebody just put some bloody faith in them! You cannot build a team at that level, or any other level for that matter, on one year. AVB said at the beginning that it would take three years, and he was right! It takes some time! My excessively opinionated and talented younger brother believes that Abramovich should just hire himself for the job of manager at Chelsea. It’s not a bad idea actually. When you think about it, at least they’d have some consistency.

WDF Team to Watch: Sunderland AFC

Yes. Our Team to Watch for February is Sunderland. Not the Manchester teams or Tottenham, or even Liverpool (shocking inclusion, I know). Sunderland. A sinking ship in December became the Black Pearl of The Premier League (see Pirates of the Caribbean). In the eleven league matches since Steve Bruce was sacked Sunderland have had seven wins, one draw and three losses. This is due, in no small part, to the hiring of Martin O’Neil. Sunderland has won ten out of 15 matches in all competitions under O’Neil. (Oh, a fun fact: those three games they lost were against Tottenham, Chelsea and Arsenal, all by one goal.) Now, when Sunderland signed Sessegnon from PSG back in 2011, I thought that was a brilliant piece of business. He was great for PSG but never really showed his true ability in the EPL. He is now hitting unstoppable form with the Black Cats (see Norwich game, February 1st). The team has evolved from the bland, boring football they played under Bruce to a free flowing, counter-attack game. Lining his side up in a formation similar to Bruce’s, O’Neil let Sessegnon play in a traditional number 10 role drifting from flank to flank or driving through the centre. Going forward, they look like a 4-4-1-1. Defending, the shape is that of a 4-5-1. Sessegnon was not the only resurrection that O’Neil brought about; players like James McClean and Fraizer Campbell have been revelations under O’Neil. Players drift in and out of position in a beautiful but simple fashion, leaving such teams as Norwich, Wigan and even Manchester City absolutely perplexed. O’Neil’s task now is to solidify his defense, as I do not see relying on Manchester United rejects Wes Brown and John O’Shea as the answer. Bring someone in like James Tomkins; a young centre-half who’s decent on the ball and is a good tackler. And most of all, he’s young! He has a good bit to learn but working with someone like O’Shea, who has played for one for the Big Boys, could help progress both Sunderland as a team and Tomkins as a player and a future England star. Oh yeah! And some bloody wingbacks! Wow does that ever need improvement! But, one thing at a time; I shouldn’t get too ahead of myself. Regardless of the slight vexations that need to be worked out, O’Neil has transformed a mediocre side into a dangerous threat in the Premier League.

WDF News: Arsenal FC - Guns but no bullets

Arsenal has only won two of their past six league games. This equals to only one league win a month, starting in January. Not even as of late, but since the beginning of this season Arsenal’s form has become something of a question mark. On Wednesday Arsenal loss the first leg of their Champions League game to AC Milan 4 - 0. Arsenal’s woeful luck continued onto Saturday after facing elimination from the FA Cup by Sunderland 2 – 0 on Saturday.  Their loss against Milan and Sunderland has literally taken away any chance of Arsenal winning any type of silverware this year.  The last piece of silverware Arsenal had won was the FA cup in 2005 and the last time they have won the league title was in 2004. Even Tottenham’s current form is better then Arsenal’s and it is Tottenham and not Arsenal who are known for their mediocrity. It is not as if they haven’t had their opportunities. Throughout the years Arsenal has always been known to scout out young talent and turn them into absolute wonder kids; Clichy, Nasri, Cesc Fabregas, Adebayor, Henry, Yaya Toure, Van Persie just to name a few. Where the problem lies for Arsenal is their inability to keep their young star players and their lack of attention towards signing developed star players. Arsenal’s last big signing was Samir Nasri for £11m in the summer of 2008 who was only 20 years old. Nasri is now excelling at Manchester City in his prime. Even at this point Arsenal still has a lot of very good young talent such as Alex Oxlade Chamberlain, but their lack of experience on the field has expressed itself into offensive and defensive breakdowns. Arsenal is a prestigious club with a great history and their dedicated fans deserve a team that will play to their true potential. What it really comes down to is how transparent are the board's decisions and attitudes among their fans. Until this happens the veiled finger will start pointing in different directions at who is at fault for the current mediocre form of the Gooners? Arsene Wegner or the Board? Who ever it is the fans deserve an answer.

Prospects Corner: Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain

I’m getting sick of Arsenal wonder-kids. Honestly, do they factory produce football talent?! Ramsey, Wilshire, Coquelin, Walcott, the list seems never ending. Arsene and his eye for talent… Anyway, moving right along... Oxlade-Chamberlain came to prominence during his tenure with Southampton, rising through their prestigious youth academy. (Other players you may know who graduated out of the Saints Academy are Gareth Bale, Theo Walcott, Leon Best — you know, small stuff.) He made his first team debut at 16 years and 199 days old. Oh, and by the way, that made him the second youngest player in Southampton history to play a first team game — the first was Theo Walcott. He signed his first pro contract a couple of days after turning 17 and went on to make 36 appearances for the Saints scoring nine times.  A couple of days short of his 18th birthday, Oxlade-Chamberlain signed for Arsenal in a deal worth £12 million. He started slow with the Gunners, largely because Wenger made it that way, but is now integral to their success. In the last three games Arsenal has played, Oxlade-Chamberlain has been the best player on the field for the Gunners. Yes, even outshining the mercurial Robin van Persie. When Oxlade-Chamberlain is on the pitch the whole team works better. On top of his natural leadership skills, he is wickedly talented. Versatility is his middle name and Alex can play anywhere in an attacking midfield position. He can cross, dribble, pass and score (two goals against Blackburn, taken in fine style, I must say). He is on his way to being a complete midfield package. Prediction time again: next season he’s Arsenal’s MVP. Already more valuable than Walcott, Gervinho (don’t get me started on him), Rosicky and pretty much anyone else playing in an attacking role, Oxlade-Chamberlain is destined for greatness.

WDF News: Evra vs Suarez

Yes and the English Premier League Soap Opera continues. The racial dispute that exist between Patrice Evra and Luis Suarez escalated, even though intentions were to bring the conflict to a halt. During the pregame meetings Suarez skipped Evra's hand, but Evra was intent on shaking his hand. Which lead to Ferdinand not shaking Suarez hand out of pure principle for his teammate. And then all pandemonium went loose...Just watch:
Oh man poor Ferdinand caught in caught in between that cruching tackle. It seemed as if Evra had every intention of hurting Suarez, not sure if the League will look at that. What was Evra thinking. He could have really hurt Ferdinand when they are already going through such a crazy injury scare. If he had made contact with Suarez that could had been a potential red card and that reckless tackle made the United back line so open. But oh it doesn't stop there check out the celebration  after the United win.

I really couldn't tell you who is the bigger child. Suarez for his racial game smack talk towards Evra (common Suarez be more creative, that is low) or Evra's on field antics that prolonged the dispute. For pearl sake it is a handshake, you are not going to catch koodies. I guess sense gives you money, but money don't give you no damn sense.

WDF Pregame Big 4 Line Up: Game 25

Manchester United vs Liverpool FC Feb 11
The Red Battle Begins

Manchester United: You know when you are treading water for a really long time and your arms get really tired. So now you’re just concentrating on trying to keep you head above water. Well this is Manchester United. They are still suffering an injury epidemic. Even though they are two point from the top it seems as if they just only have their finger tips on the cliff.  Their recent 3-3 tie with Chelsea proves how unpredictable they have become these days. They either show up strong and early or late with horrible excuses.
Key Player – Ryan Giggs: Believe it or not but, United just signed Giggs to another one year contract. I can’t believe he is still playing without any robotic body parts. Giggs is so old, but I got to tell you he is class and he is very football smart. Expect him to be the main distributor in the centre of the park.

Liverpool FC: Liverpool is coming off of a 0-0 loss to Tottenham. Even after their offensive explosion against the Wolves it didn’t seem like they could get anything going offensively against Tottenham. It only seemed as if Bellamy, Gerrard and Carrol were attacking at times. And what does three attackers against four defenders equal? A lack of inspiration. A more aggressive attack will be necessary for success
Key Player - Craig Bellamy: Let's try and remember here that Craig Bellamy is actually a striker and not a winger. He is very valuable to Liverpool right now, because they lack so much quality on the wings right now. He has traded in his scoring talents for wing play making skills. By the way doesn't look like a raging bull running down the wings.

Justin's pick: Man Utd 2 - 1 Liverpool                  Austin's pick: Man Utd 0 - 3 Liverpool

Aston Villa vs Manchester City Feb 12

Aston Villa: Aston Villa's current form has not been entirely inspirational. They have only won one game out of their last five games. Their last win was against Wolvehampton. Don't let the intimating name mislead you though. These Wolves have been the subject of prey for the past while. Since the absence of Ashley Young Villa have seem to loss the ability to create. Man I bet aboglahar misses him a whole lot.
Key Player - Robbie Keane: with Agbonlahor on the injury list Villa will look towards Robbie Keane to finish theory scoring opportunities. Robbie is a proven scorer of the Premier League and can finish well. The question...who on Villa can deliver him the ball.

Manchester City: Manchester city is a rolling and rocking train. They won their last game in convincing form against Fulham 3-0. Their last game also proved many disbelievers of their defence wrong. Vincent Kompany made Clint Demsey seem non-existant. Despite their earlier loss to Everton this team is in form and only they can impede their current success. Or maybe Manchester United will in April.
Key Player - Yaya Toure: Ecstatic couldn't even come close to the words Alberto Mancini must feel to have Yaya Toure back (or as I like to call him Makalali 2.0. If City were a car Toure would be their engine and transmission. He is the most lethal defensive mid out there. He holds, defends, scores, creates, he does it all.

Justin's pick: Aston Villa 0 - 3 Man City              Austin's pick: Aston Villa 0 - 3 Man City

Newcaslte Magpies vs Tottenham Hotspurs Feb 11

Newcastle Magpies: Newcaslte is looking pretty swanky these days. They have won their last two games.  They have also scored four goals in their last two games. Newcaslte is starting to look like their vintage counterparts
Key Player – The Senegalese Front: I know you’re looking at the name like what? But to be honest we couldn’t just choose one player, but two instead; Demba Ba and Papiss Cisse. This attacking force is like Steven Segal and Arnold Schwarzenegger in an action packed movie with big guns and absolutely no dialogue. They don’t even talk, just grunt manliness as they defeat their foes. But going back on topic Ba and Cisse are going to cause havoc for defenders. Cisse speedy and Ba target man, what a combination. May I also add that Ba has sixteen goals. Can someone say Alan Sheerer.

Tottenham Hotspurs: Tottenham is looking very strong defensively, but their paugle of injuries makes their movement forward very static. A perfect example of this was against the Liverpool game. At times it seemed like Adebayor was the only one attacking, just him against four defenders. In order for Tottenham to win they have to support Adebayor and give him some delivery.
Key Player - Scott Parker: Newcastle can be so dangerous on the counter-attack with Ba and Cisse running at you. Saying this Scott Parker need to do a good job of holding the mid field. He will have to make critical tackles and help keep possession. Don’t let Newcastle catch you on the back foot Scotty Parker.

Justin's pick: Newcaslte 2 - 2 Tottenham                   Austin's pick: Newcaslte 1 - 2 Tottenham

Arsenal Gunners vs Sunderland Blackcats Feb 11

Arsenal Gunners: Arsenal have shaken the monkey off their and have finally won their first game of the New Year, and oh man was it ever a win. They blew the Rovers out of the water 7-1. Expect Arsenal to play with more confidence cause they have a habit of being really streaky when it comes to goals.
Key Player - Alex-Oxlade Chamberlain: All hail Prince Alex-Oxlade Chamberlain... I am sorry was that to much? But you got to hand it to his parents, what a name. My bad getting off topic. Anyways Chamberlains play last game was inspirational. He was making strong runs and scored two goals. Tell me if I am wrong but don't Arsenal look so much better as a team when he is on. What a youngster.

Sunderland Blackcats: The past while Sunderland has been looking like a pretty mean black cat. From the beginning of the year Sunderland has won seven of their last nine games, including MANCHESTER CITY! They have done all this under the new management of Martin O’Neil. Oh and let me tell you fear does not linger in the back of the net for Sutherland. They have scored seven goals in their last three games.
Key Player- Stephane Sessegnon: Oh man this man single handily powered the Sunderland offence. Sessegnon is always there like him and Sunderland has been best friends for years. He is instrumental and every single goal, be it an assist or scoring himself. And man he is everywhere, right, centre, left. For a minute I thought I was seeing doubles.

Justin's pick: Arsenal 2 - 2 Sunderland                       Austin's pick: Arsenal 2 - 1 Sunderland

WDF News: Capello's Resignation

Oh man this is just happening way to fast...Capello....RESIGNS!! The status of his job has only been on the bulletin for a week or so. What is even more surprising is the fact that the Football Association (FA) would decide to welcome a coaching change when you are five months away from the Euro Cup. Let’s also point out the fact that under Capello England had been playing the best football we had seen from them in years. For pearls sake they beat Spain three months ago. What is going on over in England? The FA Board must have been drinking out of the River Thames. It has been made aware that conflict between the FA and Capello was a dispute over the FA’s decision to strip John Terry of his captaincy. Capello shared his opinion of discontent towards the FA’s decision on Italian media. Today the FA and Capello had a meeting at Wembley to address the John Terry situation. The meeting ended with Capello’s resignation. ARE YOU SERIOUS CAPELLO!! Are you actually going to lose your job defending JOHN TERRY! Hey maybe the FA poured out a glass of the green water out for Capello too. When John Terry lost his captaincy the first time it shouldn’t have been even given back to him. The FA is looking at a possibility of Harry Redknapp taking over the vacant manager job, but I can’t imagine him devoting time efficiently between club and country. Even Guus Hiddink has been mentioned as an option. Can you imagine? That would be pretty wild. Steven Gerrard has also been named as a possibility to take over the captain role.

WDF Postgame Big 4 Analysis: Game 24

Wow. A weekend of wow. I’m not sure where to begin so lets start with the big one.

1. Chelsea vs. Manchester United Feb 5

I was sitting with my girlfriend, whose knowledge of football is…maturing, lets say and she made an amazing call — at 60 minutes, I had written Man U off: 3-0 down and no sight of a revival. She turned to me, after I proclaimed with great exclaim that the game was over, and said, “there’s still 30 minutes, they could come back.” I thought this was ludicrous. Half and hour later, she was smugly cooking something delicious as my jaw and ego hit the floor, looking at a 3-3 final. The scoring opened with the much-maligned Johnny Evans turning the ball into his own net, just after the half hour mark. The OG will have his name on it but the United defense were all to blame. Seconds after the half time break, United were staring down the barrel again. United were caught deep in their half and Torres found Mata with a beautiful cross for his Spanish compatriot to volley home in fine style. More sloppy defense led to the third Chelsea goal, this time with Ferdinand to blame. David Luiz slipped his United counterpart and nodded home an in-swinging cross from the right. Replays will show that his header took a major deflection. United needed something and three minutes after the third goal Hernandez was introduced with Paul Scholes coming on minutes after. The substitutions had immediate effect on United’s offensive play and made Chelsea pay for their turn of sloppy defensive play. Two penalties in under 10 minutes put United back on the scene. Chelsea was now on the back foot and holding a very narrow lead. The pressure was too much and six minutes from time, Javier Hernandez found the equalizer. None other than Ryan Giggs picked up a loose ball near the touchline and found the unmarked Hernandez completely unmarked in the box to power past a helpless Cech. Chelsea rallied for the winner but had it not been for some sublime goalkeeping on De Gea’s part, they would put the game to bed. I’m quite sure the United fans took the ride home north much the happier of the two supporters.

2. Manchester City vs. Fulham Feb 4

Manchester City was back to winning ways against a under-par Fulham Saturday afternoon with a convincing 3-0 victory. City took the game by the scruff of the neck and dictated play right from the opening whistle. It didn’t take long for City to go ahead and ten minutes in, Adam Johnson was pulled down in the box in controversial style — a staple mark of the EPL these days. Aguero was clinical from the spot and the hounding was just beginning for Fulham. I didn’t take long for City to find the second and Johnson again was the provider on the half hour mark. Kolarov, who was looking City’s most threatening player on the pitch, whipped in a dangerous ball from the left flank finding Aguero. His deft flick-on found Johnson whose wayward shot was deflected past a helpless Shwarzer for Chris Baird’s second defensive blunder of the game. Fulham never looked threatening and City finished the game off with 20 minutes remaining. A well-worked play down the left flank found Aguero, the Argentine skipping by Phillipe Sendros to set up Dzeko for an easy finish. Even though City were greatly under-par from previous victories, this result will greatly progress their title hopes.

3. Liverpool vs. Tottenham Hotspurs Feb 6

Poor Liverpool. Anfield will seem more like an cursed graveyard than a hallowed sanctuary for the men in red. A master class on both teams part in defense could not inspire an attacking one and the game was left 0-0 at the final whistle. Martin Kelly did well to nullify the danger of Gareth Bale but did little going forward and the Tottenham defense were equal to the threat of Andy Carrol. There were a few sparks in this dulcet affair with Jay Spearing popping up to unleash a 25 yard cracker only to see his shot wiz by the post. Bale had arguably the best chance to win the game six minutes from time when he found himself with only the keeper to beat. Reina was outstanding and had his angles picture perfect and Bale’s shot was parried away to keep Liverpool from utter disappointment. The much-maligned Luis Saurez made a guest appearance 30 minutes from time but could do little to influence the game. The affair finished a stalemate with Tottenham going home the happier of the two, firmly situated below the Manchester teams, with Liverpool languishing in seventh.

4. Arsenal FC vs. Blackburn Rovers Feb 4

Looking at the score line you wonder if Blackburn’s team bus even made it to the stadium. Arsenal has received their first win of the New Year in convincing fashion. They crushed Blackburn 7-1. Extending a scoreless drought to two games must had been too much an overwhelming thought for Van Persie. He scored within the first two minutes off of a cross from Walcott. Blackburn thought they could make a game out of it. On the thirty-first minute Pedersen scored a beautiful free-kick 20 yards out. Placing it ever so nicely in the left top corner. The interlock didn’t last long when Arsenal scored 2 quick goals at the thirty-seventh minute and the 39th minute. Van Persie scoring the first with another assist from Walcott and the second assisted by Van Persie to the Young Chamberlain making a cut into the box. Signs of frustration show when Givet is sent of f for a two-footed tackle into Van Persie. After that it was all down hill and more “Arsenal Gun Show”. Arteta scored in the fifth minute of off a badly cleared corner. The young Chamberlain scores again in the fifty-forth minute off of a blazing diagonal run from Walcott for the assist again. Van Persie finished his hat trick in the sixity-first minute. As the goal went on Blackburn’s now turned schoolboys performance became of something not to desire. Even Theiry Henry scored. Oh man this game was good and the Goals were nuts.
****PS. Watch out for the return of Arsenals terrifying galloping horse man….I mean Forwards….Forwards. Man Van Persie, Walcott and Chamberlain are fast.****

WDF Pregame Big 4 Line up: Game 24

1. Chelsea vs Manchester United Feb 5

Chelsea: Chelsea's current habit of missing scoring opportunities has lead them to tying their last two games against Swansea City and Norwich City. Swansea and Norwich are both located at the bottom half of the table. Chelsea wants a win to chip away at the seven point gap that is between them and Tottenham.
Key Player - Fernando Torres: It will come down to whether Fernando Torres will keep up his passing and attacking form, even though it hasn't been producing many goals. Chelsea only have two goals in there last three league games

Manchester United: United have won their last three league matches. Nine potential starters on the United team are injured. This includes Wayne Rooney, Ashley Young, Nani and Vidic. This has lead to United scrapping by wins instead of in convincing fashion. Their last win against Wolverhampton has put them at the top of the table tied with Manchester City. United will look for a second win to keep their position.
Key Player - Paul Scholes: I know...Paul Scholes, put seriously think about it who else is going to play make and distribute the play for United. United will have to lean heavily on Scholes vision and passing skills to generate their offensive chances. You could also expect Giggs to make an appearance off the bench.

Justin's pick: Chelsea 0 - 1 Man Utd      Austin's pick: Chelsea 2 - 0 Man Utd

2. Manchester City vs Fulham FC Feb 4

Manchester City: The in seemingly invincible Manchester City took a fall last tuesday to Everton putting them at equal terms with their neighbours on  the table. City wants a win to keep their spot at the top of the table.
Key Player - David Silva: With Yaya Toure being away at the African Cup of Nations, City will look towards David Silva to progress the ball up the field from their half.

Fulham FC: Fulham were deeply unfortunate to lose their lead late in their last game against West Brom. A win from Fulham can bring them up to the 11th spot.
Key Player - Clint Dempsey: Clint has been strong moving forward and attacking, He scored in their last game and currently has 14 goals this season.

Justin's pick: Man City 3 - 0 Fulham     Austin's pick: Man City 3 - 0 Fulham

3. Liverpool FC vs Tottenham Hotspurs Feb 5

Liverpool FC: Liverpool has seem to gain momentum offensively score five goals in their last two games. Visually it looks as if Liverpool has gain confidence attacking especially along the wings where they used to lack strength. A win could put them in 5th spot.
Key Player - Luis Suarez: The man of mischief, Luis Suarez is back after suffering a match ban. expect his diagonal runs to open up space for Andy Carrol to preform. You can also count on him to create some scoring chances of his own.

Tottenham Hotspurs: Tottenham's current third spot position contributes towards their offensive strength. Their last win against Wigan (3-1) is an example of this. Even with their current success Tottenham still shows vulnerability in their back line. They have given up 4 goals in their last 2 games. A win is important for the Spurs to chip away at their 5 point gap from the top.
Key Player - Gareth Bale: Gareth has been the Hotspur's main source of attack with three goals in his last two league games. look for him to continue his current scoring form and good distribution.

Justin's pick: Liverpool 1 - 1 Tottenham  Austin's pick: Liverpool 1 - 1 Tottenham

4. Arsenal FC vs Blackburn FC Feb 4

Arsenal FC: Arsenal finds themselves in some tough times right now. They have not won a single game in the past month. Arsenal's offence is fine, their defence is the problem. They have let in seven goals in their last four games. A win can put them in forth spot.
Key Player - Robin Van Persie: Van Persie will need to preform for Arsenal to produce a win. He leads his team and the English Premiership with 24 goals. He will need to be active for Arsenal to be successful

Blackburn Rovers: Blackburn's woes continue as they lose their last game against Newcastle. They currently sit just inside the regulation zone and are desperate for a win to keep them from the bottom of the table.
Key Player - Anthony Modeste: Modeste will need to step up as Blackburn's scoring force with the absence of Yakubu at the African Cup of Nations.

Justin's pick: Arsenal 2 - 0 Blackburn   Austin's pick: Arsenal 3 - 0 Blackburn

Prospects Corner: Mario Götze

I know we're supposed to be committed to the Premier League but I must devote our inaugural  "Prospects Corner" to Germany's next sensation. I'm not kidding, the kid is nuts! If you haven't heard of this wonder-kid yet, (12 International caps and 2 goals already, making him the youngest player EVER to achieve such a feat!!) I would strongly suggest checking out one of the thousand Youtube videos on him — horrific trance/house music and all. Nothing against house or trance music it just sounds like cocaine. I'm getting off topic. Götze came through (what is now becoming) the coveted ranks of the Borrusia Dortmund youth academy. His time there was short and at the tender age of 17, manager Jürgen Klopp promoted him to the first team. He took his chance exceedingly well making 5 appearances that season. The writing was on the wall and the next season Götze was handed the number 11 kit and a full starter for Borrusia Dortmund (BVB). His attacking genesis helped propel Dortmund to the Bundesliga Championship, tallying 6 goals and 11 assists. WOW! A few more statistics why don't ya! This is a blog not the BBC. Focus man, focus! Götze is by far the best attacking midfielder in Germany (a bold statement, I know) I would go even as far as to say he's challenging the much coveted Neymar for best young player (if you haven't heard of him then you're REALLY  not paying the necessary attention to achieve footy nerdness like me). Give him two seasons and Mario Götze will be showing Andrés Iniesta a few tricks on proper attacking movement and passing.

Football or Soccer

Acouple of days ago I went to the park to kick a ball around to deal with the stresses of the day. When I arrived at the park I noticed some guys having a scrimmage game going on. I walked over and asked an individual..."May I join your 'Soccer' game". He gave me a funny look like he had eaten some bitter candy and said to me with a thick british accent, "there ain't no soccer here, this here is football". As North Americans we often forget that we aren't the only ones who play this beautiful sport we call "Soccer" but we are the only ones that call it by that name. This made me think...where did the name come from. During the 1970s when America was starting to build the grassroots to a english style of professional football league, they were thinking of ways to properly market the sport and the league to the masses. The North American Football Association was the first name decided for the new league, but since American-Football had already been adopted in the nation prior to English-Football a conflict would be caused between the two names.  Therefore the directors were looking to change the name to take away the familiarity with Americas primary sport. Since they had already decided to call the collection of teams an association the directors decided to replace the word "Football" with a shorten version of "AsSOCiation"; "SOCcer". I bet no one ever really thought when they were saying they wanted to play soccer they were actually saying Association. In the end the man with the thick british accent let me play but he made sure to remind me, "Mate this is the original Football you here me, because you use your foot and a ball not that rubbish across the border where they are running with balls in HANDS calling it FOOTball"
